Online Zendo

Zen Practice Online!

For the sake of all beings, we have decided to temporarily hold our weekly zazen practice online, instead of in person.

Join us for a simple weekly practice led by Scott “Zengen” Thompson, Sensei of the White Plum lineage. This is a temporary measure while in-person meeting is discouraged due to current serious health threats.

Current Online Practice Schedule (all listings are Eastern Time):
Thursdays at 6:30PM (join between 6:15-6:30) – the room will be LOCKED to new participants at 6:35PM

We also encourage everyone to join our sister practice, the New River Zen Community. They are holding a Wednesday evening practice from 7:15-8:15 with a 25-minute sit followed by a Teisho. If you are interested in attending the New River Zen Community practice, please contact them on their website: https://newriverzen.org/

Expect some basic instruction for any new members who may show (even if you are an experienced practitioner), followed by one or two 25 minute sessions of silent Zazen (just sitting) together, followed by check-ins and a short, interactive Dharma talk (if time allows). Expect to spend 1.5 – 2hrs with us. If you must leave early, that is fine. Please just silently bow and leave the meeting if you have to go during the meditation period.

If we do two rounds of sitting, there will be about 5 minutes of “body practice” between the two rounds. When we meet in person, this body practice is in the form of Kin-hin (Kinnin) or ‘walking meditation’. We acknowledge that this is not possible for everyone’s situation, so if you are able to do the walking practice, you may do it. Otherwise, we ask that you spend the time doing a few yoga postures, if you know some, or just some ‘mindful’ stretching.

You should wear comfortable clothes and have a quiet place to practice. Make sure you have a secure spot for whatever device you are using to connect and that it’s plugged into power (because this service can drain the battery). If you have meditation equipment to use (such as zafu, zabuton, seiza bench or a firm chair) that is ideal. We do ask that you set aside this time for only this, if possible. Please refrain from eating, checking messages, etc during the practice. The check-in and Dharma Talk period is less formal.

Please note that we do this as a “secular” practice. We do not do Buddhist chants or liturgy. This is simple zazen designed to be welcoming to those of all faiths, or no faith.

We recommend that you join our local Facebook group, if you haven’t already, for future updates: Beckley Zen Meditation Group

You may join by computer or phone (or both). Please be aware that if you join from the website, or by using the meeting link, you will be using internet data. That could be an issue if you are on a limited plan. If you prefer to just call in, of course you will not be able to see the video portion. You may be asked for your participant ID if you call in. If so, just press “pound” (#).

If you have any difficulty, please call Seby at 304-222-2337 before 6:35PM

We thank you for your practice.
